The most common cause of Bilious vomiting syndrome in dogs

Bilious vomiting syndrome in dogs is a fairly common phenomenon .

This is a reaction to an overproduction of bile in the digestive system that causes this type of vomiting.

Dogs with bilious vomit syndrome vomit on an empty stomach several hours after eating .

Often this symptom is neglected, but I advise you to fix it as soon as possible to avoid your dog’s other health concerns (ulcer, chronic gastritis,…).
Bilious vomiting syndrome is a form of gastritis

Gastritis is characterized by the fact that the lining of the stomach is inflamed.

In the case of bilious vomiting syndrome, this inflammation is produced by the bile which is naturally secreted. The mucous membrane of the stomach becomes more fragile and the level of acidity increases.Bile and acids thus increase irritation and inflammation of the stomach and when they reach a certain degree, the reacting dog vomits.
Symptoms of bilious vomiting syndrome

Dogs with bilious vomiting syndrome will tend to vomit in the morning, on an empty stomach, several hours after eating their last meal. When the stomach is empty, the acids cause irritation.

The symptoms of this condition are::

Vomiting in the morning or late evening
Vomiting yellow (bile)
Previous signs of distress or pain vomiting

Treatment of bilious vomiting syndrome

1) the first tip is to reduce the waiting time between meals .As it is the empty stomach that is responsible for this syndrome and well multiply the number of meals in the day( small quantities) and especially give him one last small meal before going to sleep.

2) at the level of medicinal products :

there are some medications that can help treat this syndrome.
To decrease the acidity of the stomach, :

1)Antihistamines H2

H2 means histamine receptors: in fact these drugs prevent the activation of these receptors and thus fight against the acidity of the stomach .

as a molecule :

Cimetidine (Tagamet*): 5-10 mg / kg, 3x / day
ranitidine (AZantac*, Raniplex*): 0.5-2mg / kg twice daily

2) proton pump inhibitors

Also, it is a family of medicines that reduces the acidity in the stomach and is even more effective than antihistamines .

They work by inactivating the “pumps” that produce hydrochloric acid.

as a molecule : omeprazole (Mopral*):0.7 mg / kg taken alone in the evening .

here you need a prescription !!

3) antacids

These are products that neutralize the acid in the stomach, which relieves the pain!!

Maalox*: 0.5 to 1 mg / kg 2-4 times daily
Gaviscon*: 25 mg/kg 2-4 times a day
Phosphalugel* or phoshaluvet: 145 mg / kg orally 3-4 times per day

4) anti-emetic( against vomiting)

metoclopramide (Primperan * Primperid*): 0.2-0.5 mg/kg orally

So in a nutshell :

1) split the meals during the day and give one last small meal before going to sleep to your dog .

2) if repeated bilious vomiting diet for 12 hours, only water per small amount
give her Tagamet * + an antacid (Phospaluvet*) to relieve the pain .
Eventually, give PRIMPERAN one day to flush the stomach

If no improvement or blood in the vomit, consult your veterinarian for an examination of the digestive system ( ulcers ,….)

Bile

Bile is a digestive fluid that is also present in the human body. It is a liquid that participates in digestion, it is produced in the liver and then accumulated in the gallbladder for further release.

From the gallbladder, this fluid is expelled into the small intestine and is essential for the digestion of fats, as it allows the emulsion of fats.

The most common cause of biliary vomiting

When a dog vomits bile, it usually does so after a prolonged period of fasting. If your pet has spent hours on an empty stomach, bile, along with other digestive fluids, accumulates in the stomach without the presence of food.

These fluids are prepared to facilitate digestion of food, but without the presence of these in the stomach, they are very aggressive to the gastric mucosa.

Bile irritates and inflames the gastric mucosa, therefore, as a defense response of the digestive tract, vomiting occurs. In this context, vomiting occurs only in the form of a yellow and greenish liquid.
Serious causes of biliary vomiting

Sometimes bile vomiting can indicate various pathologies with different degrees of severity. We will see in the remainder of this article What are the main conditions that can cause vomiting in your dog :

Inflammatory bowel disease : in this case, bile vomiting occurs frequently and is accompanied by diarrhea which can sometimes be accompanied by blood.

Liver disease: when the liver is affected, there may be an overproduction of bile causing it to vomit. In this case, you will also observe a typical yellowing of the eyes and mucous membranes.

Pancreatitis: a dog affected by pancreatitis will show various symptoms, including loss of appetite and vomiting. As we have seen, vomiting with an empty stomach causes expulsion of the bile. In this case, you will also notice abdominal swelling and diarrhea.

Ingestion of indigestible objects: if your dog has swallowed an object, it will cause stomach irritation, an increase in bile production and finally vomiting with a yellow aspect. Vomiting bile may also be observed in cases of poisoning.

If bile vomiting is accompanied by these symptoms, it will be essential to take a stool sample in a sterile vial so that the veterinarian can later test it and select the most appropriate treatment.
